Clear Answers to Your Top Acne Questions

Clear Answers to Your Top Acne Questions

Posted by Amelia Goff on

At Fresh Face Skin, we understand that dealing with acne can be frustrating and confusing. Our team of experienced skin therapists are here to provide clarity and support on your skin journey.

Here are some of the most common questions we receive about acne and our expert advice:

Do I need professional skin treatments to help with acne breakouts?

We like to explain your at-home skincare routine, as your skin’s diet; topically, providing your skin with the much-needed nutrients it needs, to improve and maintain healthy function.

Professional skin treatments on the other hand, are your skins 'PT' or personal training workouts! Designed to push your skin in a controlled way, to improve its functions, while correcting damages; enhancing its performance so that it can cut through the breakout cycle and begin healing, for long term skin clarity.

As well as improving and repairing cellular function of the skin, regular professional skin treatments will also ensure that surface dead skin cell build up is removed, instantly unclogging pores, while revealing a brighter and smoother complexion and will also allow your skincare products to penetrate into the skin more effectively, providing even better skin results.

When it comes to achieving real, long term skin results, consistency is key. Your at-home skincare routine and in-salon professional treatments, as well as working internally via supplementation and internal support via naturopathy where needed, will ensure that both the internal and external triggers that are influencing and causing your skin concern, are treated, helping to provide long term skin results.

What are your thoughts on common prescription acne medications?

We believe that every skin journey is individual and that your personal choices should always respected. Our job is to share our professional advise and experience, where needed, to help provide you with clarity and direction, while offering you the best skin results and experience with us as your trusted skin professionals.

In our experience, prescription acne medications can be effective short term, when it comes to clearing stubborn and deep set bacteria, however long term, can come with internal and external side effects that can often, cause the concern to return and/or worsen in the future.

This is why addressing the 'root cause' of your skin concern, is key, to ensure you can clear your skin and then maintain skin clarity and health, long term.

Here at Fresh Face Skin we focus on treating the skin holistically, which means that we treat the skin via natural, sustainable solutions, that promote long-term skin health, often treating the skin from the inside - out.

If you do choose to go to a GP or dermatologist for acne medication and are thinking about booking in for a professional skin treatments, always disclose your medications to your therapist, as some treatments may not be suitable or safe.

I use a lot of makeup to cover up my acne. Am I making it worse?

We completely understand the want to cover up areas of the face that you may feel insecure or self-conscious about, in fact, our purpose at Fresh Face Skin is to empower you to wear the skin you're in, with confidence, naturally and makeup free.

The facts are, that heavy makeup can clog pores and worsen acne... If the skin cannot breath, bacteria will build.

If you can't give makeup up, here are some of our top tips to ensure that even when you wear makeup, your skin can breath and your acne is not worsened.

  • If you work from home or find yourself at home over your time off, utilise this time and set yourself some makeup-free days throughout your week, giving your skin the opportunity to heal without added pressure.
  • Opt for a mineral-based makeup. A high quality mineral makeup or a light tinted SPF will not only allow your skin to breath, reducing the likelihood of pores being blocked, but will also assist with the skins ability to heal and calm surface inflammation. Mineral makeup contains minerals that often have natural healing and anti inflammatory benefits for the skin.

  • Ensure your PM routine includes a double cleanse - allowing for a thorough, deep skin cleanse every night. Think of your 1st cleanse as what's removing surface build up such as - makeup and product and your 2nd cleanse as what's actually cleansing the skin, while using active ingredients to help improve the skins surface health. *Tip - to help prolong the product longevity of your cleanser, we recommend purchasing a natural and gentle pre-cleanse product that is designed to cut through surface product prior to cleansing with your chosen cleanser, enhancing your cleansers benefits and improving your skins clarity. Our Pre cleanse product has been designed to do just this.
  • Add a sleep mask, such as our recovery mask to help your skin heal while you sleep.

"I started seeing results in literally 1.5 - 2 weeks following a LED treatment and making changes to my skincare routine to include Fresh Face products. The results I saw were reduction in redness to my skin, a slight fading to my pigmentation (which is unbelievable as it normally takes months), little to no breakouts and more hydrated feeling skin." "I was at a point where nothing was working for me, and I was losing hope after years of trying, but something pushed me to try this option before resorting to medication—and I'm so glad I listened!" Read Tash's Journey

Should I get extractions done professionally?

Extractions can be beneficial for clearing clogged pores and reducing acne from forming, as well as helping to clear congestion fast, however should always be performed by a professional to avoid skin damage and scarring. Our in-salon skin therapists are trained to perform extractions safely and effectively, ensuring your skin is left clear and healthy, without causing added surface damage.

My Hormonal acne comes and goes. Should I change my products during hormonal times?

Consider adding the Healer range into your routine 1-2x daily, to give your skin extra external support when it comes to skin healing, inflammation and bacteria, during predictable breakout times. This time will differ person-to-person, so listen to your skin and its patterns to get a clearer understanding of how to give your skin extra support during these times. This simple addition in your skincare routine, will greatly improve skin healing time, while ensuring that your skin barrier is protected. The Healer Cleanser deeply cleanses, to help clear surface bacteria and calm inflammation, while the Healer Treatment boosts skin healing by clearing stubborn bacteria, calming redness and inflammation and balancing oil.

Our Healer range has been designed to provide your skin with the extra external support needed when your skin is congested and breaking out, with the aim to reveal a more clear, calm and radiant skin, long term.

I have acne elsewhere on my body. Can I use the same routine as my face?

Yes, absolutely.
Whatever you apply to your face, you can definitely apply to the body as well - baring in mind, that often, acne on the chest and back can be sweat induced or hormonal.

For both the body and face areas - keeping your linens and towels fresh - changing them over every 2 days, will help to prevent bacteria build-up that can contribute to acne worsening and forming in the first place.

As well as treating the skin externally with skincare, addressing internal triggers is key, via seeking a naturopath or supplementation to help remove internal triggers all together.

If you have tried all avenues and you still feel your acne is worsening, we recommend doing your research and seeking medical attention. If this is the case, know that we are here to support you, every step of the way via our topical skincare recommendations and if your in Victoria Australia, via our in-salon professional skin treatments.
