Why Natural Skincare Can Vary Batch to Batch - and Why That’s a Good Thing

Posted by Amelia Goff on

When you choose natural skincare, you’re choosing ingredients that are alive in origin. Sourced from plants, flowers, and fruits, these ingredients carry the imprint of the environment they were grown in. And just like fresh produce, no two harvests are ever exactly the same.

At Fresh Face Skin, our formulations are built around naturally derived, plant-based ingredients. This means that from time to time, you may notice subtle differences in colour, texture, or scent between batches of the same product.

This isn’t a flaw – it’s a reflection of authenticity.

Nature doesn’t produce uniformity

Unlike synthetic ingredients created in controlled lab environments, plant-based ingredients are influenced by seasonal and environmental factors. Sun exposure, rainfall, soil quality, and temperature all play a role in how a plant grows – and ultimately, how it looks, smells, and performs.

This is why natural ingredients can vary slightly from batch to batch.

A closer look at what this means in your products

Take chamomile, for example – a key ingredient in our Soother range. Chamomile is a delicate flower known for its calming properties. Depending on when and where it’s harvested, its colour can range from a soft pale yellow to a deeper golden tone. The aroma may also shift slightly, from light and floral to a more herbaceous note.

In our Barrier Mist, cucumber extract is used as a natural fragrance. Cucumber is incredibly sensitive to growing conditions, particularly water content and temperature. Some harvests produce a fresher, lighter scent, while others may carry a slightly deeper, more green aroma. This can create small variations in the scent profile of the mist from batch to batch.

Hydrating Barrier Mist

Similarly, in our Reverser Cleanser and Treatment, we use ingredients derived from fruits and botanicals, including sea buckthorn oil. This vibrant oil is naturally rich in carotenoids, which give it its signature orange hue. However, the intensity of this colour can vary depending on the growing season and harvest conditions. Some batches may appear brighter, while others may lean slightly softer in tone.

Even citrus-derived ingredients – found in our Reverser and AHA Enzyme exfoliator products – can present small differences in scent. A fruit grown in a warmer, sun-rich season may produce a slightly sweeter, more pronounced aroma, while another harvest may feel fresher and more subtle.

In short, as new batches of raw ingredients are used in our formulations, slight variations in colour and scent are completely normal.

Why this is something to embrace

These variations are a sign that your skincare is made with real, active ingredients – not standardised, synthetic substitutes designed to look and smell identical every time.

It’s also a reminder that your products are made in small batches, with care and intention. We don’t strip away the natural characteristics of our ingredients to force consistency. Instead, we work with them, preserving their integrity so your skin receives the full benefit of what they have to offer.

What stays consistent

While you may notice slight sensory and colour differences, the performance and purpose of your products remain the same. Each formulation is carefully balanced to deliver consistent results, supporting your skin barrier and long-term skin health.

The beauty of working with nature

When you use natural skincare, you’re experiencing ingredients as they truly are -  shaped by nature, not manufactured to be identical.

These small differences are part of the process.

Part of the quality.

And part of what makes Fresh Face Skin & natural skincare so special.
